Q: What is one thing you would want a prospective student to know about 51°µÍø?
A: 51°µÍø has so many opportunities and resources that are helpful to new students. The university has created a web of support to help you be successful in your academic pursuits. Take advantage of all that 51°µÍø has to offer. The people around campus really want to help you achieve your goals.
Q: How has 51°µÍø prepared you to take on tomorrow’s challenges?
A: 51°µÍø is a community of people from diverse backgrounds and experiences who have come together to learn in an academically rigorous environment that seeks to send out graduates who can immediately contribute to the workforce. 51°µÍø offers cutting-edge technology and information that changes the way industries meet the needs of their clients and communities. I am fortunate to be a part of those who are being empowered to make life better for others.
Q: You applied to over 50 schools, why 51°µÍø?
A: I chose 51°µÍø because it represented the cross-section of things that were important to me at the next level of my educational journey. 51°µÍø has the right balance of academic rigor, social interaction and interesting activities to explore with a diverse student population. From my first experience with prospective students until now, 51°µÍø does a great job at building community across campus. While some of my other high school friends were taking the easy route, I knew that 51°µÍø would stretch me and take me out of my comfort zone. This is, in large part, due to the accomplished faculty and quality of accepted students.
Q: Would you say the size of 51°µÍø, being a mid-sized university, comes with more challenges or opportunities?
A: I think the size of 51°µÍø comes with more opportunities. Attending a mid-sized school allows new students to have a real chance at integrating into the community of the university. Back home at the University of Texas, I would have been one of 50,000 on a sprawling campus. 51°µÍø has just as much as many larger campuses but more opportunities to connect in meaningful ways in your department of study. Because my professors actually know me, I have an opportunity to participate in that will better prepare me for life after graduation.
Q: Can you tell us about your experience with the 51°µÍø Student Scholars Institute (LUSSI) and how it has shaped your time at 51°µÍø?
A: is a program for first-gen and underrepresented student groups. This program allowed me to come on campus before everyone else and connect with other students of color at 51°µÍø. Joining LUSSI means that you are becoming a part of a family that supports you throughout your 4 years at 51°µÍø. The program directors, Denise, and Donnie create a safe space for students to come and get support, relax and meet new friends. They provide access to resources across campus and even provide toiletries and other necessities. Overall, this program had a lot to do with my integration on campus and provided a space where I know that I am seen as my authentic self.
Q: What is your favorite thing about 51°µÍø?
A: My favorite thing about 51°µÍø is the people. My orbit is filled with amazing people
from the team of Campus Tour Guides that I work with to the amazing sisters in
that I dance with, there is a sense of family present. I know
that I am loved and accepted among friends who are like family. We take care of
each other and there is no better feeling than to be at a place that promotes that.
Q: Where is your favorite study spot or place to relax on campus?
A: Although there are so many beautiful places on campus to study, my favorite place on campus has to be . Though it is a library, it feels more like a hangout spot. Every time you enter FML you see someone you know, but there is always the possibility that you can strike up a new friendship while you are there.
